Gloucester Chess Club fielded a team in the National Club Rapidplay Championship held at Magdelene College School in Oxford. Games were played with just 20 minutes on each clock, and match results were based on a grading handicap system. The Gloucester Team of Dave Buchanan, Ian Ponter, Phil Dodwell and Geoff Taylor finished a respectable 4th place from 11 teams.

Two new players have joined the Division One squads for Gloucester this season. Tyson Mordue is trying to win as many games as posssible this year to raise sponsorship for the Braille Chess Association. As part of his campaign he hopes to play in most matches for Gloucester Tigers this season. Dave Harper has returned to Gloucester Chess Club after several years and is now playing for Gloucester Dragons. Both players took part in the club's first Division One match which saw the two teams meet with honours even -

Gloucester and Cheltenham met at Cheltenham Chess Club in the Final of the Edwardians' Knockout Cup. The handicap system meant Gloucester needed 3.5 points to win the 6-board match, a 3-3 score meaning victory for Cheltenham. Non-playing captain Phil Dodwell led his side to vitory by the narrowest of margins. Cheltenham took an early lead when Mike White defeated Dave Buchanan on board 1. Then Ian Ponter on board 2 and Pat Baker on board 4 secured draws. Geoff Taylor won the next game to finish, on board 3, to bring the scores level at 2-2. When Sean McClellan won his endgame over Ken Parker on board 6, Andrew James needed only a draw to win the match. His opponent, Cheltenham captain Peter Bending, was unable to find a win in their rook and pawn endgame, and the half point sent the cup on its way to Gloucester.

The North Gloucestershire Lightning Tournament was again held at Gloucester Chess Club this year, and Nigel Hosken again agreed to be the tournament controller. As always the buzzer claimed its victims and some strange moves were played before the 6 rounds were up.
Geoff Taylor (Gloucester) won first prize with a score of 5.5/6. Phil Meade (Cheltenham) was 2nd with 5/6. Ian Ponter (Gloucester) was 3rd with 4.5/6. John Wheeler (St Edwards) won the Under 120 grading prize with 4/6. Ed Broom (St Edwards) won the prize for best junior. Richard Sida (Gloucester) won the prize for best first round loser.

The next North Glos Lightning Championship is to take place at Gloucester Chess Club on Tuesday, 14th December starting at 7.15pm. Entry fee £2.00 payable on the night. The usual rules - the buzzer goes every ten seconds and you must move on the buzzer. Illegal moves or failure to move loses the game. There will be as many rounds as we can fit in on the evening. All entry fees will be returned as prize money. This tournament is open to everyone, not just Gloucester Chess Club members, so please come along.

Gloucester teams are doing well in the North Glos League as play stops for the Christmas break - in Div 1 Tigers lead the table undefeated and Dragons have recorded their first win in their last game of 2003 against Musketeers; in Div 2 Gloucester lead the table with four wins and one draw with another win likely awaiting one adjudicated game, and in Div 3 the Gloucester team have ended the year with an unexpected 4-1 win over Cotswold.

Gloucestershire came 7th from the 10 teams who took part in the BCF Counties Team Rapidplay held at The King’s School, Gloucester. Four players from Gloucester Chess Club took part - Phil Dodwell, Graham Bolt, Geoff Taylor and Ian Blencowe. They enjoyed mixed fortunes, but afterwards Graham, Geoff and Ian repaired to the England's Glory where they won second place in the pub quiz and went home with two bottles of wine.

BCF Counties Team Rapidplay comes to Gloucester, Sunday 29th September.
Venue: The King’s School, Gloucester
The King’s School occupies most of the buildings in Pitt Street, whch is just behind Gloucester Cathedral. The tournament will be held in the main hall, which is reached via the Junior School entrance in Pitt St. There is also a side entrance direct from the rear car park.
Start time: 1.30pm
Events: All teams will compete in the same section. However, in addition to the normal Open Championship there will also be a handicap competition based on Grading.
Format: A four round Swiss tournament for teams of 12 players.
Standard BCF Rapidplay rules, with players having 25 minutes each per game.
A player's eligibility to play for a County is in accordance with the current BCF Counties Championship Rules. Teams to be in grading or current playing strength order.
